Cliff has never hurt a human being like that before. He had killed animals while hunting – and he always used precision when he did that. He picked the most painless, swift position to aim for and launched an arrow into the air to reach its target. Despite the act of killing another living thing, there was a peace to it. In Cliff’s mind, those were merciful and memories he had with his father. The time he had left a poor animal to whiter in agony still gave him nightmares. It was the worst thing he’d ever done to another living thing.
But as he straightened up from lunging at this man, the ring on his finger faded from a pink color to a red one.
There was an adrenaline rush that went through his body as the guy screamed and swore at him. He saw the blood on the other man and his eyes hardened. Cliff’s heart was pounding out of his chest as the guy came towards him. Cliff was half pressed against the car – his ass was against the driver’s side door and his back faced the window. He was focused on his attacker. When the guy lunged to grab him, Cliff rose his arm and brought the knife down right on the guy’s shoulder. Cliff then kept a firm hand on the blade and raised his knee, slamming it into the taller man’s gut to try and get him to stumble back and fall. Cliff ripped the knife out of the man’s shoulder and kept it positioned on him. His hands were covered in blood but he wasn’t shaking. The shadows of the trees hid his face from the moon’s light.
”No, you listen to me,” Cliff said, ”You back the fuck off, and leave my –“ There was a moment he almost slipped and said friend. But he tightened his hands on the handle and continued speaking. ”My wife and I -- alone”
Cliff kept himself steady as he waited for a response. If he had successfully gotten the guy down, he’d bolt for the car – if not, he didn’t want to risk this guy getting the jump on him by grabbing his foot while he moved.
