The week had been particularly rough in the classroom. She did her best to encourage her students to pursue their talents or even just try but this past week the kids seemed more unruly than usual. Normally she wouldn't think of getting drunk at a bar but for some reason the prospect was quite appealing.
She was already on her second Mai Tai, though she had not downed the first one. The music floating around her caused Alika to sway pleasantly to the melody. It was the standard background noise, to help mellow the conversations around her. Very rarely did something more brash come through the speakers.
She was itching to dance, however. The easy listening grooves were very difficult to get down to however. So she stayed seated in her spot, stirring her straw around in her drink, humming along. Not many people were at the bar as she was, instead small groups were seated in some of the nearby tables. A Bachelorette party, a few college kids, some older men probably getting together for a guy's night.. SO far in her quick glance around no one really stuck out.
The bartender wasn't too bad-looking but in her experience bartenders actually were at good conversation. They were more focused on their job--as they should be! But how was she supposed to shake off the effects of the week past without something or someone else to focus on? With a soft huff she blew a stray strand of her curly hair out of her face. It fell back into its spot which caused her to tuck it behind her ear.
Nibbling on the piece of pineapple from her drink, she turned to the barkeep. "Could I get some more slices of this? I'll pay for it, obviously." To her delight a small bowl of slices was placed in front of her. "Thanks, Mike." She winked at him and was sure to tip him well.
The sweetness of the pineapple and the savory taste of the rum mixed together, causing a pleasant lightness to float to her head. Why did fruit go so well with rum? That was an interesting thought to ponder.
