It was probably the dry shampoo that was making her hair smell citrusy, but she didn't mention that. He definitely didn't need to know that she hadn't washed her hair for about four days! She could feel him touching her hair, and the old feelings and memories came flooding back. She missed those moments - the ones where he would just play with her hair, and she would be in the most relaxed mood whilst he did. It was calming, and nobody could do it quite as well as Jack did. "Thought I'd try something a little bit different," she smiled, enjoying the moment. "Though I do prefer the sweeter smell."
She sniggered at his question. Of course he wanted to see the flyers, she didn't expect anything less from him. "I'm sure my mom still has like, 20 of them in our kitchen drawers." She wasn't going to admit that she kept one in her room, just so she could see his face. But it wasn't really the Jack she knew. The photo on the flyer was one cropped from a Christmas event or something, but his face looked cold and harsh. He never looked like that with Rumer. He was so much softer and calmer when he was with her, a completely different person to the Jack everbody else knew. All the photos she had on her phone of them together, or ones of Jack that she'd taken when he wasn't paying attention, he looked happy and content. She wished they had used one of those photos instead.
"A magical fort? Sounds pretty perfect to me. We could go anywhere we wanted.." If only they could be inside that magical fort right now, taken away to somewhere else. But nope, not a chance of that happening. Rumer looked over at Jack when he told her not to leave, and she gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. She felt Ruth's eyes bore into her, and she half wished she could just disappear. When Jack spoke, she cringed a little inside. She didn't want him and Ruth to argue, but especially not here - it wasn't the right time or the right place.
"You don't have to speak for me. He already knows I was sad and concerned about him." Her hand was still locked with Jack's as she spoke. "But I'm sorry Ruth, I really don't think you have any right to walk in here and talk about respect." Ruth was a good person, and Rumer knew that. But she really didn't need to waltz into the hospital and talk down to Jack. "This isn't going to help with his recovery in the slightest, and I'm pretty sure you could wait until he's home to do this." Ruth probably didn't even know what surgery he'd had, or even the reasons why he was here. She understood that she was stressed, but it really wasn't helping anybody right now.
Rumer had to force back the tears as Jack explained to Ruth what brought him back. She didn't realise she was the reason, she just thought it was time for him to return, that he'd ran out of money or something. She looked over at him and offered him a small smile, though it didn't seem to fit in with the atmosphere in the room, especially not when Ruth's tone seemed more angry at the fact she had realised that Rumer did in fact know about him leaving.
"Like you said yourself, I was upset and concerned too," her expression was blank and her eyes were locked on Ruth's face. She couldn't help but be pissed off with her. Yeah, she was bound to be upset. But she didn't even know her son. She didn't know what he was interested in, what he hated, what he actually wanted to do with his life. She knew fuck all about him. And here she was, acting like she did, almost as if she deserved the award for Number One Mom. "Because you don't know anything about him. Not a single thing. That's why you didn't know we were still close." She tried her best to keep her tone as monotone as she could manage, but there was definitely a hint of anger in her words. She turned to face Jack, trying to keep herself as calm as she possibly could. "But he's back now, so you don't need to do this. Or at least not in front of Jack, anyway. If you're pissed with me, then we can talk outside like adults."
