When Clay noticed the tears building in her eyes it was difficult to maintain his cheery smile. He didn't want her to let those tears out, it would hurt so much to see them roll down her cheeks. But he kept his grin in tact, keeping it comforting and warm as she held on to him tighter. He wasn't ready to let go either, he wasn't ready to let her slip away with only her memories to keep him company - but Clay had thought long and hard about this, he knew it was all for the best. Everything could go back to how it had been, to a degree. Lucian wouldn't be suspicious of him and Clay wouldn't have to keep making excuses for his being so out of touch. In a way, Clay was dreading that... having Lucian assume control over him again. Maybe he wouldn't make himself that available, just so he could skirt his friend's expectations even further. By now, it didn't seem like he expected much of anything from him anymore. A relief, but Clay didn't know if that would last.
He didn't let the thoughts steal him away from these moments, walking out further in to the waters. Time seemed to slow, as did the sound of the tide as they passed wave after wave. The seaweed brushed his legs lightly as it swayed underneath the surface - a sensation which he'd prepared himself for. He had to admit that it was a little intimidating, walking in to the seemingly endless sea. “No,” he replied with a hint of his timid smile, “I've only just walked along the beach... never been really in it. I do want to try it though,” Clay was sure that she'd know how, or at least he figured she would. He was definitely comforted by her willingness to teach him, his smile blooming as she moved ahead and led him forward. He laughed when he thought back to his first swimming lesson from her. “At least in the pool you know how deep you're getting.” Clay spoke, keeping his eyes upon her as she started to instruct him – nodding, “So, just let myself float... when we're in deep enough?” he asked curiously, doing his best to loosen up as they got in deeper.
It wasn't long before they got past the sandbar, the sand underneath their feet dropping fast. He knew to tread the water, though the water was moving and churning around him this time – he moved within it, letting himself bob around – his hand holding hers a little tighter when a bigger wave rushed toward the shore. It was a little scary, but her presence there kept him from letting it surface. Another wave came and Clay laughed after it crashed overhead, effectively drenching them. He blinked the salt water off his eyelashes, continuing to chuckle when he saw the state of Toni and her hair – damp in its curtain over her face. He let go of her hand to help her move the strands away, tucking them behind her ear. “This isn't so hard,” he smiled softly, “it's fun. You just have to keep calm, the water does the rest.”
