Finally, after two weeks of careful planning and labor, Dane was putting the last finishing touches on his very first official tiling job. He'd done a lot of different pieces at home, the constantly changing mosaics in his backyard, on his mother's birdbath and on the pathway to their patio - but there was something about getting paid for his work that was so... fulfilling.
Though Esme Booth was a friend to his mother and the job started as a kind of favor, it gradually became clear that he wasn't just some amateur at this. Dane was focused. It helped that the majority of his job was in the bathrooms at her studio, so he could just lock himself inside and zone out in to his work. When he finished with them, he had the foyer's main counter to do. He'd saved his best idea for last, using Esme's preferences as a guiding line for the piece and glad she trusted him to work on it when the studio was closed like it was now. She'd picked out mirror tile for everything, so putting it all together was like breathing to Dane, so easy but nevertheless rewarding.
Now it was pretty much over, though. All the bits of tile found their places in the thin layer of glossy cement, all dry now and gleaming his reflection back at him - just subject to a little bit of scraping where the cement attempted to bulge over, then polished with a handy white bandana. This part was meticulous but it wasn't the hardest part for Dane, the hardest part would be walking away from it once he was officially done. That way why he was taking his sweet time now, he wasn't really ready to part with his work just yet - not until he knew it was absolutely perfect in its own unique imperfections.
