Arthur was still glowing as the song ended and people started to look at them, the look to his face completely giddy as he looked down at her stomach and danced with her. If their current position could be counted as dancing, anyway, given how still they were. Arthur was too happy to notice the fakeness in Chardonnay’s smile – though he should have known, given how often he saw her fake smile around others – and when she excused herself to go to the bathroom he nodded. ”Okay.” He said, as the song ended and Chardonnay left. He watched her for a minute as she went, the smile still hard to get rid of.
And, as soon as she left, Darren and Kyle came over to bug him.
The boys slung their arms over his shoulders. ”Art’s fallen in love, guys!” Kyle said, the word ‘love’ catching Arthur off-guard and making him blush. ”I – I don’t know if I’d – “ Arthur was ignored in his sputtered protests as Kyle and Darren led him away from the floor and back towards their table. Even Erin had shuffled over in her big, bulky dress. Arthur realized the spectacle that just have just happened and his ears peppered pink, too. He had forgotten, in the moment, that they were on the dance floor able to be seen by all. He was so embarrassed. Chardonnay was going to kill him.
”Oh, leave him alone!” Erin sat down in Chardonnay’s chair this time, giving Arthur a warm smile. ”You two look really cute together.”
”Maybe we’ll be attending your wedding next,” Kyle taunted and Arthur went completely red in the face.
”Shut up, Kyle! I’m not getting married. Chardonnay and I are – well – we’re just dating now. Don’t mention marriage in front of her,“ He said.
”Well, yeah. Now. Maybe the next wedding will be yours. As in, in a few years.” Kyle said. Arthur looked uncomfortable as he tried to change the subject – and failed. He glanced to Erin, Peter was long gone for now. ”Not holding onto Peter’s arm all night?” He asked. Erin rolled her eyes.
”You know me. I hang on no man’s arm all the time.” She said. Arthur snorted and shifted, so he could sit up in his chair and gain some of his dignity back.
”Right. Except every man you’ve ever dated.” That prompted a smack from Erin on Arthur’s shoulder. He shook his head, and glanced towards the bathrooms. He had, thankfully, changed the subject to Erin now, and hopefully his friends wouldn’t tease Chardonnay the way they’d teased him.
