The problem with not taking pills every single day was that it made it extremely difficult--nay, impossible-- to count how many days one had left in the prescription bottle. Unfortunately for Carly, she had run out two days ago and did not realize it until that morning when she had decided perhaps she should not be her crazy self this day. Clearly she was unable to do that, so off to Salem general's Outpatient Pharmacy she walked.

Her hair was an absolute mess this day, so she had decided to cover it with one of the few hats she owned. Her eyes were also quite sensitive to light from last night's visit to the bar--she had woken up in a stranger's bed today-- so her sunglasses were also on her face. She was down at the moment, a wave of depression hitting her at the realization of how long she was going to have to wait in line.

So Carly stood there, clutching her coffee in her hand and gently blowing on it to cool it down. Someone walked up behind her, which naturally made her turn her head to look over her shoulder. It was a young man, looking perhaps just as terrible as she felt. Well, the appearance of someone she might actually be able to talk to was a blessing.

Motioning to the long-ass line, Carly sighed. "You would think they would have a developed a better system by now to do this, hm?"

He hadn't pushed it like this before, not since he was an inpatient. Clay just let his meds dwindle unintentionally, got busy with other things and prioritized them over his own good. Like he hadn't already learned his lesson then, to always keep up with his stock of medication. Even if he did learn, that didn't help him now. His head seared. When he woke up that morning Clay could hardly stand, though he managed to, long enough to lessen the sensation with a couple of pain pills. They might have taken the edge off, but they didn't do a thing to the echoes. The jeering sneer of Gordon would gradually become clearer. Clay had to make sure that didn't happen, and to do that he had to get over to the hospital's pharmacy - as quick as possible.

The erratic rushing to catch an uptown bus made his withdrawal from the medication more prominent, and being stuffed in to a moving box filled with strangers didn't help either. It reminded him of the getaway train ride, the one that landed him in the hospital in the first place. His head swelled and felt as if it was morphing wildly with each passing moment without the mentally sedating calm of his pills. Clay clasped his hands together, digging what nails he had in to his skin - to confuse the pain in his head. But that didn't work for long, and by the middle of the bus ride he could make out the voice of his brother whispering within him. His vision overlayed with the memories of his brother's slow death and his heart picked up a pace that it hadn't reached since. An adrenaline fought to overcome him, but Clay had felt this before and he knew where it would lead him. His hands clenched tighter. He would be there soon. It wouldn't get out of control.

There was a walk from the bus stop to the hospital grounds, and even more of a walk to the outpatient pharmacy itself. Clay didn't hurry as he had to get the bus, he found that the sun and calm winds eased him from the war in his mind. He could push the voice and imagery back. He could think of Toni and him on the roof and under a gold-fretted sky - but as the clouds rolled over the strong sunlight, the war eased in to infiltrate the small joy he'd found. It made him angry, and the anger welcomed the entity he'd created in his vengeance. Deep insults aimed at himself burrowed around, wavering audibly within his skull. The flowing blood, the rising flame... the enthralling agony. Clay's skin began to tingle all over, starting at his hands and the crown of his hooded head. A powerful urging bubbled in his veins, persuading to give in, take a thrill ride. As he passed the E.R. vehicle entrance, Clay's mind flashed. The more recent past of his ride in the ambulance came in to his mind's eye, the taste of blood flooding his mouth. A reverie of rage sought to uplift him from the subdued nature he'd kept under - but even still, Clay fought it.

He hastened his pace, now more desperate than ever to get his medicine. The lust to bring the blood out, the quiet of the liquid itself dazzled his recollections. Clay glanced at each person he passed within the corridors, his imagination entertaining itself - picturing each one in a different sort of agony. He began to shake with the thoughts, his eyes finally pinning to someone who walked ahead of him. A predatory haze surrounded him as he focused on the back of the woman's head, his will beginning to congeal with the demands of his ravenous, personal demon. His hands twitched at his sides before Clay forced them to fold over his chest and cling to the fabric of his sleeves. He had to force his eyes away from the potential victim, fixing his focus down to his shoes. He was almost there now.

Glancing up to navigate his way to the pharmacy, he realized that he was still following the woman. His mouth twitched and he clung to himself even tighter, feeling his body tremble underneath the material of his clothes. The voice of his brother swirled behind his ears, coaxing him with its virulent repetitions of Gordon's choice phrases. As he reached the pharmacy, naively thinking that the worst was over now - his inner hopes dropped at the length of the line. His jaw clenched as he stepped behind the same woman he'd been following unintended. All he had to do was wait for his salvation. But then the woman turned around, catching him off guard - his focus thrown. He couldn't bring himself to look at her. "But that would make coming here easy." Clay heard himself say sharply, his voice soon lost in the cloud of words within him.

Her fingers tightened around the cardboard coffee cup in her hand, her less-than-lucid mind not even noticing how scalding hot it was. For some reason this young man with the darkness about him.. Carly could not take her eyes off of him. Perhaps it was her own inner darkness reaching out to something familiar--a faint memory of her past in which she had been in a low for nearly a week. Of course, with the way her mind swung back and forth between random thoughts and cravings as often as the disease that plagued her.. She could have just as well been wanting another sex-capade.. As if the apparent one from the previous night was not enough.

Carly found herself staring at the gentleman's lips, noting how little they moved when he spoke. She wondered if perhaps her lips moved the same. His words would have been lost to her was she not able to read lips. Her reaction and reply might have been a bit delayed for first she had to flick her line of sight away from those lips, biting her own. Carly settled for the gentleman's eyes, equally as dark and entrancing as his mouth.

An unexpected laugh escaped her throat, her mouth widening into a grin and a surge of serotonin flooded her brain. These changes always caught her off guard but this particular one-- going from depression to elation-- was always almost orgasmic. "True. They wouldn't want people to actually be excited about getting their medications, would they?"

Running her index finger around the edge of the coffee mug, Carly tilted her head at him. "You aren't sick are you? The last thing I need on top of my apparent insanity is the flu or something.. Ah!"

Her finger slipped and was cut on the sharp plastic of the coffee lid. Lifting her finger to see the extent of the damage, she noted the small red dot emerging from her skin. Delicately, Carly sucked on her finger, closing her eyes for a moment. Though she would never admit it, the metallic taste of her own blood was a soothing sensation. Her eyes flicked to the young man and she smiled, her finger still in her mouth. "Papercut.."

Clay still clung desperately to himself, shifting his arms and sinking his hands in to the opposite sleeve of his jacket - holding his elbows and digging his nails in to the hidden flesh of each arm. It pulled the pain that the voice wanted to inflict inward. It kept the people around him from danger, at least for a few moments. He could just see how the blood might flow upon the linoleum floors at his feet, he could smell the musk that only violence could create. He winced as he dug deeper, taking a sharp inhale as the sound of the woman's laughter mixed with the sneering words circulating around his mind. "They'd put em in a slot machine if they could." Clay said darkly, his own words mixing with his brother's inflections as he kept his eyes pinned to the windows at the end of the line.

Another wave of sensation shivered over him, the grip on his arms getting numb to his nails as his hands and arms experienced the heat of the fire that had ended it all, a fire long since extinguished. He shook his head at her question "Not sick. Just psychotic." Clay said abrupt - biting his tongue in a vow to himself that he'd keep quiet and just focus on his present goal. But that was before he heard the distinct reaction to pain. It was like a sudden trill of music. His attention snapped to it, to the small bead of blood that pressed out from her. Clay knew that there was much more of that, so much more from where it surfaced. Pools of the thick red on shimmering plastic faded in to his memory, disorienting him slightly before he forced his gaze away right as she opened her eyes - biting down on his lip to distract his mind from the happenstance accident. He shrugged as if to say, 'it happens' as he wrestled with the imagery in his mind. The severed fingers of Gordon were prominent, as was the audible pleading turned bitter and venomous when Clay, one by one, took them from his control. The hand of the EMT he had bitten in to sequentially surfaced, his cry of pain and confusion, and again the taste of blood persuaded his senses to favor the ill will of his worst desires.

His breathing began to grow labored and he had to part his mouth slightly to get more air in. His heart thumped like wild. Multitudes of thoughts twitched his fingers. The trembling turned to tremors in his arms, visible by the quake of his shoulders. He tightened up again, needing this to all be over - needing to just get his prescription and get out of there.

The taste of her own blood caused her pupils to dilate. It had been a long time since she had tasted the thrill that accompanied the red liquid. Honestly, this phenomenon was what even alerted her parents in the first place that there was 'something wrong' with her. Her lows--when left without her medication for an extended period of time-- would bring Carly into a dark place of her mind. When she was pulled from that place either by her own highs or medication she would have no recollection of what had occurred or what she had done.

This had only occurred twice in her lifetime, from what medical records would show. It was the curse of her disease.. In her highs Carly was a bright and talented individual. But in her depressions.. The only hints as to what occurred during those times were locked away in a medical filing cabinet somewhere. Needless to say, the young man's gruff response of being 'psychotic' didn't phase her in the least.

She removed her finger from her mouth, a small line of red on her bottom lip forming, almost like the remnants of lipstick stuck to the skin. Pushing the hair from her face, she ended up smearing some of her lifeblood on her forehead, not that she minded. Her eyes locked onto his face and a small smirk formed on her lips as she extended her hand to him, taking notice of his tremors but not paying them any mind.

"The name's Carly, raging bipolar disorder freak."

A searing sensation pushed under Clay's shoulder blades as he clenched as tight as he could. He could hardly allay the force that pressed to tear out of his body now by himself. Not with the blood right in front of him like this - causing his mind to lurch and swoon in to a tempestuous rush of sense. His torso was stung numb by the ghost of dead flames - his hands and arms still burning and grasping on to himself desperately. The antiseptic air and fluorescent lighting above didn't remind him of anything happy or helpful during this struggle. It pushed his memory to his time as a psych ward patient, straddling the limbo between psychotic sobriety and medicated relief - being kept in solitary the majority of the time.

Though being locked up by himself wasn't a very drastic change from the home life he'd escaped from - he struggled to contain the part of him that he had released. It'd been growing stronger within him during Gordon's abusive guardianship and after the culmination of Clay's rage - that power wanted more control. It wanted and craved the encouragement of Lucian. It didn't want to be locked up any more and it sure as hell didn't want to be doped and subdued.

Now it was surfacing again, after a successful period of keeping it in the dark where it belonged.

His eyes were pulled from the distant goal and lowered upon the woman. Another wave of sensation deadened his desperate attempts to keep himself in check and his grip loosened from his arms, slacking down to his sides. He mimicked her smirk as he could imagine the smear on her forehead begin to pool and drip down her face, "I'm your worst nightmare Carly." Clay spoke, trying to force himself to not take her hand as his mind persuaded otherwise. It wanted to see more blood flow from her. It wanted to lash out for being kept away for so long and punish everyone who had the misfortune of being near. With everything he could muster, Clay folded up his arms again - clamping his hands under his armpits, "You really shouldn't talk to me anymore." he warned, looking away from her face and the oxidizing blood on display, toward the front of the line again.

Keeping her eyes locked on him, Carly let her hand drop down to her side for a moment, taking note of the increasing darkness about him. His talk of being her worst nightmare.. how cute. Seriously, how cute was that? Her elated self gently bit her bottom lip, taking in his full figure. With the way she was, nothing really scared her. Perhaps it was her depression self that clung to the bit of darkness in everyone.. Or perhaps it was her happy, go-lucky self that refused to let go of what was good. She didn't know, didn't really care. All she knew was dark and menacing didn't frighten her.

Actually, it could have just been her childhood visits to the psychiatrist. All the others in the waiting room, after a while she had gotten to know their names and ignore the self-mutilation, the evil grins and threatening behavior. And then after more time those sounds and experiences become almost normal, like a sort of homey feel. Even on her medication Carly did not mind these people.

"Well, Mr. Psychopath.." She began, taking another sip from her coffee, her eyes looking at him over the rim. He hadn't revealed his name so she had no other thing to call him. "You don't look like a mirror so you are wrong in that statement.. I am my own worst enemy and nightmare.. Judging from the looks of you I think you know what I mean.."

She turned her eyes away then, stuffing her hand with the cut finger into her pocket as she turned her back to him, noting the line had moved up some so she closed the space.

Throbbing now, his mind seemed to push out against the barrier of his skull in attempt to release the force within. His hands wanted to move to his head - wanted to bury his fingers in his hair and yank the feeling out of him entirely, but Clay kept them clamped. He needed at least that much control, but his mind grew more painful, Gordon's voice distinguishable and sharp to his senses. Yeah come on Mr. Psychopath.You can't keep this up for long. You want the blood on your hands don't you - It jeered, sending another tingling wave across his body in an echo. His jaw clenched and arms tightened further as she turned forward. You want to make her scream, - Thoughts of all the different ways he could bring out the sounds of pain from her flickered while he stared at the back of her head. Then it moved. The line moved and so did his focus as he stepped forward. He could make it. Wouldn't be long now.

Clay let his eyes close, pushing back the images that granted him the power to see in to the future of his satisfied whims. He reached in to his recent memory that had been ignited by the outdoor air and sun, it was a last resort but it seemed to help. The pain was still there, but the power within began to slowly recoil and the voice within softened. "It's Clay." he spoke aloud to both her and himself, "Not Mr. Psychopath." Keeping his eyes closed, he focused on the light and his breathing but his mind still swirled with ideas that he didn't want to dare entertain. When the line moved up a little more he didn't notice, busy trying to lull the darker part of him back in to the shadows.
