Part One: Beginnings
As hard as it may have been to believe for anyone seeing Peyton and Corbin for themselves the two have not known each other all their lives. They actually didn't meet until middle school, a year before starting at Metric.
Corbin was born and raised in Chicago. He was very close with both of his parents, who instilled good morals and a strong work ethic in him. He loved talking about and watching sports with his father, Alexander, who was often home more than his mother, Kyra, working long shifts at the hospital. Corbin grew up playing football and dancing; they were probably his first two loves. That all changed when his mother was offered a position in California. The family packed up and relocated to Salem, where everything changed.
Peyton was the middle child of three girls. Her dad was a secretary and her mom was a therapist, the latter making it difficult for Peyton to feel comfortable about talking. Allisan, her mother, very much made it a habit of getting involved in her daughters' business. Peyton's father on the other hand, Gale, was much easier to talk to and more open minded. It was no wonder Peyton was a daddy's girl. Peyton grew up in Georgia, in an area where a lot of people still lived like it was the 1950's. Needless to say, very obviously being an interracial child was not the easiest thing for her. Peyton didn't exactly make friends and she was ok with that. She'd rather have spent her time focusing on music. She loved to sing and play the piano. Moving to Salem for the eighth grade was a chance for her to start completely new.
At first glance Peyton and Corbin, even being the new kids at school, ran in different crowds. Corbin joined the football and dance teams easily. Peyton kept her focus on school where it always had been, as well as her music. Her family hired a new music instructor for her so that after school she could continue practicing the piano and advancing her vocal skills. But the two had meshed right from the start. Corbin and Peyton had a couple of classes together, music and drama specifically. They had bumped into each other on the first day and easily bonded over being the new kids. The fact that they also shared a lunch period together and could just sit in the cafeteria and talk only helped them get closer. Sometimes with Peyton, Corbin truly believed it was love at first sight. She'd joke about him seeing past her mess of curls, but Corbin would always just smile. To him, it was always obvious. He always knew. Peyton was only slightly different. Her first impression of Corbin was that he was tall - his six foot height completely towered her five foot one. It wasn't intimidating as it was kind of attractive. But for Peyton, it only took a month for her to know that there was something more with Corbin. A little bit of time was all it took for them to know.
But neither of them would say anything. At least, not that easily. No matter how obvious it was to everyone else, Corbin and Peyton meant too much to each other to risk their friendship. So they found other ways around it. Corbin always invited Peyton to his games. It was a different experience for her, and something completely out of her comfort zone. But she always agreed because she'd do anything for Corbin. She just loved seeing him partake in something he loved so much. But there was also the matter of his grades. Even though Corbin was never the worst student, he wasn't the best either. That's where Peyton came in. Almost like a reflex she would jump at the chance to help him. They did their homework together. They studied together. They spent a lot of their free time at each others' houses or just being there for each other. When the time for a huge test came, that was pretty much make it or break it for Corbin's middle school football career. They spent more time on that than anything else. And when Corbin came back with an amazing grade he couldn't help but finally let out how strong he felt for Peyton. He took a chance and asked her to the eighth grade formal. Peyton was beyond ecstatic and of course said yes. The two of them had been together since.
Fortunately for them, despite their age, their families were overall very accepting of their relationship. Alexander and Kyra couldn't have been happier for Corbin and knew that Peyton was a good match for him. She never gave them any reason to think otherwise. For two parents to see their son on cloud nine was a dream come true. Peyton's family was mostly the same. Even before Peyton and Corbin became a couple, Gale treated the boy like he was part of the family. It wasn't because Gale felt like he was missing anything by not having a son; but admittedly he did like watching games with him and always asked for details when he played. Corbin treated Peyton right and that was all her father really cared about. Peyton's sister Christian, ten years her senior, was often jealous at how quickly Peyton seemed to find a guy without barely leaving the house. Her younger sister Julian was more interested in staying by herself or just listening to Peyton play the piano, but never missed an opportunity to ask when the two of them would get married. Allisan was the only one who was ever doubtful. It was Peyton's first relationship and she acted like it was so serious; Allisan didn't want to see her daughter get hurt.
But that would never happen. And it never did. It only became more obvious what a perfect match Corbin and Peyton were for each other when they found out they got into Metric. Corbin would be attending for dance and theater while Peyton would focus on singing. Actually, Corbin was the one who convinced her to minor in theater. As music students the two of them would naturally have some basic classes together. But for the two of them that would never be enough. Peyton wasn't much of a performer, but she'd never turn down spending time with her man. They were going to start their freshman year together at Metric and live in a dorm together. It could have been a recipe for disaster for a lot of couples. Not everyone could handle living with their best friend, especially at such a young age. But for them, it was almost like second nature. All they really needed was each other. Even though both families were very well off and the couple could spoil each other sometimes, it was never a necessity. That was just something they enjoyed doing - especially Corbin. He always knew exactly what to say, do and get to put a smile on his girl's face.
By the time Peyton and Corbin started at Metric they'd only been together for less than a year. Some couples, especially in middle or high school, barely made it to a year. Even some adult couples didn't always last that long. But for Corbin and Peyton, it really was just the beginning. It was the first chapter of their life-long love story.
