It had been a long, work filled summer. After their freshman year ended, Hallie and Lola embarked back on the trip to North Maple way up in Maine. It had been a fun, laughter-filled road trip that Hallie loved! She offered to drive Lola in her vehicle.
Once back in North Maple the girls were greeted by the friends and family they had left behind. Everyone wanted to know how Metric was, from Theo even down to Bonnie, who was curious about what the prestigious school was like. Of course Felix showed miniscule interest, and Hallie tried to talk to school up, trying to convince her baby brother to go to Salem for college, which would be coming up for him in a year’s time. He didn’t seem swayed, but that was all right. Hallie would convince him eventually!
As much as Hallie wanted to party with Theo and Lola when they returned, she knew that she had to work hard. Hallie was planning to get an apartment when they went back to school, a nice one, and took up a second part-time job as a waitress to save up some money. She took well to the job and earned plenty of money, which she put away in the bank. She hung out with her friends occasionally, but not as often as she wished she could have. By the time summer was ending, Hallie had a full bank account and less friends who were willing to say goodbye to her. But that didn’t matter, because Hallie had Lola, who was going to be living with her! On top of that, the girls basically had Hallie’s family, who had taken Lola in as one of their own, metaphorically.
The drive up to campus was very, very long, and they took a day’s rest at a hotel. Hallie’s family followed behind her in their car, with other things packed away. For the next week the Greys would be staying in a hotel in Salem and spending time seeing the sights and having last minute summer moments with Hallie and Lola before they left for Maine again, to get back before Felix’s school year started. The family finally arrived to Salem this morning. A tired but awake Hallie pulled into the parking lot of her new apartment complex.
The building was very beautiful. It was in Uptown Salem, only a few minutes away from Metric Academy by car. Hallie emerged from her car and smelt the fresh, California air. The sun was beating down on her head and neck. The breeze was refreshing against her bare torso and legs.
She looked back at the car that had pulled in the space beside her.
”We’re on the fourth floor! But, good news, there is an elevator!” She said. Hallie led the way up into the apartment complex. Inside, it was air conditioned. Felix, clothed in all black with long sleeves, breathed in relief. Hallie found it amusing. She led the way past the mailroom and recreation center and over to the elevators, where she hit the button.
Once the elevator reached the fourth floor, Hallie led the family out until she stopped outside room 41. She pulled a key from her pocket and opened the door, leading the group inside.
The first thing Hallie noticed was the windows at the far end of the apartment. The pictures online really didn’t do it justice. The light poured in from outside, casting spotlights onto the floor in the hall. Hallie took a look around and her family followed suit – leaving the boxes they’d carried on the floor – and explored the rooms. It came with appliances and bedframes already set up. Hallie was please to find that the realtors had noted her request for them to set up the bed frame for herself she’d purchased separately. It sat in her bedroom, the one with the better view, to look out onto the Terrance and see the city below them. From the balcony, they could actually see Metric Academy!
Time passed and the family began moving things in, setting things up. Hallie too set things up. First was her bedroom – she set up décor, her bed sheets, her posters, her dresser, and eventually the room looked so Hallie she was satisfied. She looked through a leaflet on local horror attractions she’d forgotten she packed, laughed, and put it on the dresser. She entered the living room, seeing their furniture lined up and in place.
She entered Lola’s bedroom and leaned on the door frame.
”Isn’t this place so nice?! I’m so excited!” Hallie said, grinning all the while.
