It was a shit night to try to get to sleep. Jack closed his eyes, he tossed and turned, opening them again and exhaling in frustration. Whatever the fuck school day to come was taking forever and every second that passed loomed over his bed like dumb meaningless ghosts. His breath was sharp when he threw the covers off of him and sat up, his legs over the side and his head in his hands. His curses were unintelligible, grunted in to his palms as he pulled his hands down his face - looking up and over to his window. If there was a fucking trace of hope in this world, Rumer would be awake and feeling just as shitty.
Jack scooted across his bed, reaching over to his lamp - flicking it on and off a couple times. It was one of their signals, another being opening his window and tossing tiny ass pebbles at her windowpanes. But shit, if he could save his collection of pebbles for later on he would. His head rested back against his shoulder, his eyes fixed out his window, but no sign of her. "Fuck, don't be asleep." he muttered, pushing himself off the bed to trudge over to his window - opening it and squinting his gaze at the window facing him. It was almost exactly in the same place, except maybe a couple of inches to the left. Her light wasn't on, but there was a sort of bluish glow behind the parted grey curtains - or seemed like there was, so it wouldn't be a complete waste of time to try it out.
The more Jack signaled her like this, the better he got at it. At first he'd hit the window frames instead, or the siding... but he was definitely better at throwing now. All five of the pebbles tapped the glass, one after the other. His fingers reached over for a few more before he looked back and saw Rumer standing there. There was no hiding the grateful expression lifting his eyebrows as he rose his hand and pointed up.
Jack smiled as he turned away from the window, slipping his jacket on before heading out quietly, up to her rooftop. It was easier getting up there than his roof, easier staying up there too since for some reason his house had a ridiculously high ceiling - making the roof steep as fuck. He didn't even bother putting shoes on and rarely did in these late night cases.
He made himself comfortable up there, settling in his usual spot with his back resting against the shingles. It was a perfect view of the sky usually, but tonight the clouds were dense and dark. He could only barely see a hint of moonlight prodding through, it fucking figured. Rummaging in his jacket pocket, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes and fished one out, grasping it between his lips. He was gonna wait to light it though, he normally waited for her unless it was a dire shit situation he was dealing with. Tonight was just a dull fucking night, and it was ten times better up here - a hundred times in Rumer's company.
