When Susan motioned for her to take a seat, Chardonnay grew unsettled, hesitating to listen to the woman but doing so in the end anyway. She pulled the chair back and watched as Susan did the same, only across the table. Maybe she just wanted to sit down, Chardonnay thought, until the look on Susan's face gave way to something that Chardonnay didn't understand--not until the older woman said that her parents weren't alive.
She felt a jolt at those words, like her whole being was shocked and she didn't know how to respond. Her eyes widened, and she had to force her mouth to stay close and now gap open in surprise. They're parents... They weren't alive. But? What the fuck. She didn't now how to act, or how to even respond to that, especially not when Susan continued on. So that was why they were so close to each other, because they're parents weren't here, because Susan had to take care of Arthur from the time he was three until he could have been on his own. But there were still so many questions she had about it all.
It didn't make any sense. Why hadn't Arthur told her about this?
Chardonnay shook her head, and then took in a sharp breath. "I'm--I." She paused, staring at Susan in disbelief. "Arthur might have mentioned something about visiting your parents when you went to New York, but he never--" She couldn't say it, say that they were dead. "I didn't--I just assumed that they were... Alive." For the first time since knowing this woman, she genuinely felt sorry for her, and when she said, "I'm so sorry," she genuinely meant it, and her eyes even showed it as she looked at Susan.
